The 100th band on the list(oh I’m starting from the bottom and heading up ;) as recommended by Dave Sitek (Rolling Stone) is Talking Heads. The band active from 1975–1991 was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 2002. Described as having combined elements of pop, punk, funk, art-rock, avant-garde, world music, and Americana…. Which is apparently roots music, blue-sie, country style- I’ve learned something already! Well, now that I’ve gotten through preliminary research introductions (hopefully I get better at this) I should probably start talking about the music.
The first song I listened to was Once in a lifetime. The song has a great moral, and at first I didn’t like the spoken part, but it grew on me. Each time I listen to it I like it more and more, the beat is fun and chorus repetitive and catchy.
Next was Psycho Killer, boom-boom-boom-boom-ba-boom- Yea, the bass is great. I’m a sucker for base it’s such a solid deep (and sexy) sound. I must confess though, and this is the primary reason I am deterred from 80’s music, I really don’t enjoy David Bryne’s singing in this, it feels so stretched to me. This song gets so intense though, at the end everything speeds up and they just riff through the notes everything at top notch speed. Really gets your pulse up, there’s one thing about the 80’s and 90’s that’s awesome- musicians got so much more intense with their playing it seems. As opposed to now where so much of it feels auto-tuned and electronic. Among the others I listened to I really liked Burning down the House and Road to Nowhere, the beginning to that one was sweet with the band members singing together acapella~ I love Acapella J
“I think the artist's primary responsibility is to reflect what life was like in their time. Talking Heads did that.” ~Dave Sitek, Rolling Stone.
